MODERNISM-

Modernism in art is more of an abstract form of expression, and experimentation toward perfection. Some of the characteristics of modernism are purity, originality, and individualism. There are many different ways of creating Modern Art. In the artists’ examples they all have different techniques, however all are modern.
Batik is completely new for me. After reading about Batik, I think it’s a very interesting concept using wax on fabric and then apply dye. I like how the wax will create areas of different values of the same color. Also I like the idea of the cracking of the wax, to create textures. My favorite Batik Artist is Lisa Kattenbraker. In the examples of her work, I love the colors she chose. Her work also is very modern. She uses abstract shapes, and very bright colors, which make her pieces, seem very abstract and contemporary.
Batik reflects the characteristics of modernism, because in many pieces the unpredictability of the wax on the fabric. Batik is extremely expressive, and is a form of experimentation. Many of the Batik Artists were self taught, experimenting with all the different ways of layering wax and dyes.
