I think this is a start but the black and white version is still very figurative. Right now I can recognize the hammock and the person in it. The theme of the project is "Illusion and Abstraction". While the composition doesn't have to be totally abstracted the challenge is taking away the reference so that the viewer begins to think below the surface.

Abstraction is a modern process that develops the image until it no longer resembles a recognisable form. The practice reduces and factors out details so that one can focus on few concepts at a time. What begins to happen when you do this is a distortion of sensory perception (illusion), that represents what is perceived in a way different from the way it is in reality.

Also, through abstraction and illusion modern artists were attempting to uncover the universality of art, the subconscious in the art. This brings us back full-circle to the roles of artists in society...in some way.
