MUSEUM Assignment-
Soviet Textiles verses African Printed Textiles

Wheels in Motion designed by Lyubov Wikolaevna Silich is an intricate design on cotton in the Soviet Textiles showcase. It has a mixture of colors with the same value such as forest green, mustard yellow, white, black, purple, red, and maroon. It has a warm feeling, when one looks at it. This piece has an invented texture by the artist. It has an abstract pattern which creates a sense that the actual round wheels are in motion. The lines of the colors are in curves around the wheels, it creates a directional movement.
Ghana which is part of the African Printed Textiles showcase is quite different from the first piece. This realistic design is of three song birds in the middle with trees on each side of the panel with many leaves climbing up and around the panel. On the bottom of the panel are flowers and shapes of grass or leaves, with also a fallen tree, tilting over. In the negative space around the birds and in the background are textural lines in the motion of wind. This is also part of invented texture by the artist in order to create a sense of movement and wind. It also has abstract texture on the birds; their feathers are enlarged in order for the viewer to understand what they are. The shapes of the leaves on the trees are also enlarged, and abstracted. The colors in this piece are of all different values of the same blue, from dark blue to white.
